Life wasn't doing it for Ron Haggerty.
Haggerty, a 1998 Highland Park graduate, had been doing music since he could remember and even released a secular rap album in 2003 called "Life in the making."
However, he felt like a marionette just going through the motions, not receiving the enjoyment he wanted to get out of life and his music. So, in 2005 he decided to stop making it all about himself.
"The only thing that the world has to offer is temporary," Haggerty said of what he learned when he decided to be saved in 2005. "When I tried God 100 percent, that's when I started getting the full enjoyment."
Now Haggerty locally performs Christian rap. Since being saved he has released two Christian rap albums. "i Got Favor" he released in 2006. The lowercase i symbolizes the album isn't about Haggerty. The second one, called "Life in the making starring...God," he released March 20, 2009. Haggerty took the title from his first album and made God the star.
"When I did my 'Life in the making,' all the focus, all the attention was on me," Haggerty said. "But now, 'Life in the making starring...God,' all the attention is on God. God gets all the glory instead of me."
Haggerty has attended Faith Temple Church, 1162 S.W. Lincoln St., since 2005 and usually performs there the first Sunday of each month at the church's Radical Sunday.
Haggerty, who goes by RH on stage, said his latest album is high-energy excitement for the Lord. His two Christian albums can be found at Above All Books & Gifts in White Lakes Mall and Hastings or online at getrightrh.com.
While working in the customer service department of the Department of Veteran Affairs, Haggerty finds time to pursue his music and would like to make it more of a full-time gig in the future.
He performs in Kansas City and around Topeka, adding that Christian rap is a new genre for Topeka and hasn't really taken off yet because it's not well known. He's trying to set up a tour and says there is progress with the possibility of getting his music on the airwaves in Kansas City.
"I just have to go out there and (people) just have to see what I'm doing," Haggerty said.
Haggerty makes overtures to churches to see if any youths are interested in hearing his music and message. Most recently, the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex in North Topeka played host to Haggerty on Saturday.
"Just to see the transformation of an individual, to see them be excited about my ministry and also to just be a witness for God and the gift he has given me -- that is a very great thing," Haggerty said.
Haggerty said he hopes through music to relate to youth with his ministry and spread the Gospel of Jesus. He wants to show youths there is an avenue to live life with God and still have fun.
"Just because you accept Jesus in your life, and God as your savior, you don't have to stop doing what you do," Haggerty said. "I did music before, but now I do it for the Lord."

DAGOSPELTRUTH GOES HIP HOP: RH “LIFE IN THE MAKING STARRING…GOD”

It was bound to happen; I finally got my first Gospel Hip-Hop CD. I didn’t actually buy it, but it was sent it to me, so it’s kind of the same thing. Don’t you think?? I’m not really into Gospel Hip Hop, but running a Gospel blog I can’t ignore it like it doesn’t exist. The Hip Hop I’ve heard in the past had a tendency to come off corny. I don’t even like a lot of mainstream Hip Hop, but at least I know there is money backing those artists so the production isn’t going to sound bootleg. I told myself I was going to keep an open mind and try to be as objective as possible.
“Life in the Making…Starring God” by indie rapper RH wasn’t starting off well with me when I saw his CD cover. Image is HUGE to me. Artists have to remember that first impressions are lasting ones, especially new artists. Some people won’t even pick up your CD if what they see doesn’t make them want to listen to your music. You don’t have to have a big budget either to have a nice album cover photo. I know I’m supposed to be talking about his music, but I had to get that out. After I got past the album cover and popped the CD in, I instantly perked up. This dude RH has skills. I’m thinking the money definitely went into the production of the album and that’s ok with me! I even found myself listening to his CD in my car during the week. Now I’m no Hip Hop connoisseur, but I do know what sounds good to my ear. His hooks are catchy, his flow is solid and the message is easy to decipher. I didn’t find myself trying to figure out who or what he was talking about. I learned a good lesson about not judging a book by its cover. I would love to hear RH collaborate with a major Gospel artist on a crazy produced track. RH gets a green light from me for what it’s worth! Definitely give this CD a spin! Make sure you DON’T skip these songs; “Your Love,” (samples Musiq’s “HalfCrazy”) “I’ll Go” and “Can I.” http://www.getrightrh.com
i Got Favor CD Review Written by People of Promise
Right off the bat I had some trouble starting off the writing of this review. No, honestly I had trouble hitting play on the first track. I just wasn't grabbed by the cover art, and my fickle eyes were not immediately impressed with the imagery that was presented on RH's new album i Got Favor. Yet, I discovered that there is much more to RH and his music than meets the eyes. What I found beneath the cover art was not what I was expecting. RH has got flow, a unique style, and some very important things to say. Granted, I was quickly aware that he does not kick the kind of hip-hop that I have been accustomed to; but the more I listened, the more interested I became in these new songs. Even his cover, which was initially "uncool" in my opinion, started to show forth some wisdom and truth that had gone right over my head at the outset. I realized the sweet paradox of a man staring at you with a large, wooden cross on his back declaring "i Got Favor." Jesus was the man who walked the earth with unparalleled favor with God and men, yet still found himself underneath the weight and pain of a criminal's cross. I began to see that this cover art packed more weight than I had originally given credit, and my respect for this emcee grew another measure. I started to really enjoy his laid back style and brand of hip-hop that I would normally neglect with flippant impatience. The music found on this album had a strange affect on me as I listened more. I began reminiscing of the couple years that I spent living in a drug-infested area of the inner-city as I listened. I could almost feel the cool wind blowing through my hair, hear a group huddled together immersed in a spontaneous beat-box/ cipher session, and see the cop car rolling through the intersection. I could sense pleasure in the innocent aspects of the culture, as well as remorse for the devastation that had resulted from generations of sinful living. Something about RH's flow highlighted the organic, honesty of street life that was simply trying to do life, get by, get love, find purpose. I found this emcee to be free of the pretentious airs of an entertainer; he was coming across to me as a concerned, humbled, minister who is out to heal the brokenhearted. And so, I began to focus my attention on the message that he was kicking. Spiritual Significance As I followed his lines, and was feeling his message, the whole picture became even clearer. I realized that RH presents the gospel in such a pure fashion, that his truth-laced flows are a perfect hip-hop prescription for those familiar with the culture and life of the inner city. Focusing on thankfulness to God for His salvation, and the testimony of His goodness, RH has stripped away all the excess of ambiguity and ambition from his rhymes, and has kept it real with the simplicity of the gospel. I found this extremely refreshing. You will not hear any pushing of doctrinal agendas, malicious tearing down of Christian brothers, or shameless self-promotions on this joint, all of which only end in confusion and distance to the Holy Spirit. RH presents a pure flow with a prophetic spirit (strengthening, encouragement, and comfort to the listener...check out 1 Corinthians 14:3). His rhymes are simple, precise words of life that seek out those who are burdened with darkness, in order to bring freedom and enlightenment to their weary souls. Even the style of music lends to this stripped-down, clear message. RH quite often builds the track with a backdrop of hand-claps, high hats, quick kick-hits, and simple synth sounds that are reminiscent of Ambassador's "Get You Open" single off of The Thesis album. Many of the songs also feature some nice female vocalists that blend in well with the overall smoothness of the music. The sound collage is not busy, and usually contains a slowed down tempo, that focuses on sparse beats that remind you of a street-corner cipher jam. Because of this, the focus is quite effectively kept on the message of RH's lyrics, which explore God's love, testify of the strength that comes through salvation in Christ, and offer an encouragement to trust in Jesus. His relaxing style is a much appreciated departure from my usual musical selections and is a nice fit for kicking it with some friends, strolling through the park, pressing through the work day, or having a devotional time with God to receive new strength. Be aware that i Got Favor is only holding down 9 tracks, and clocks out pretty quickly. But if you are looking for some variety, and a minister who brings it real with some honest encouragement and pure gospel representation, RH is your man. Topics Covered "Searching... Keep Running" (feat. Arturo Lassiter) From the top, RH throws down Matthew 16:24-25, quoting Jesus's admonition to take up our cross and follow Him if we want to find true life (remember the album art... also notice the "i" is not capitalized). Testimonies of God's saving grace and the benefit that comes by offering up our lives to Christ follow close behind. "God Hop" (feat. Talisa Haggerty) Containing a hook about holding onto Jesus and never letting go, this song offers some more gospel truth, explanations of our need for Him, and heartfelt prayers and words directed towards the Savior. "I Got Jesus" Jesus! In every situation ... Doctor Seuss- Green Eggs and Ham style! "Not By Sight" "I can feel the pain you're going through, Jesus came to comfort you. Don't worry, everything is all right. Walk by faith, and not by sight." About the death of a friend and dealing with the questions, pain, and picking up the pieces of this issue. "Right On Time" (feat. Sharisse Verser, Janel Johnson, and Talisa Haggerty) Intro kicks off with some T.D. Jakes flavored encouragement. "Joy is gonna come in the morning... David said wait upon the Lord!" God's timing is always right, even when we want to disagree. This track confesses struggles, but relentlessly returns to faith in God's goodness and wisdom, remembering that He is always faithful to come out on top victoriously! "Shine" (feat. Sharisse Verser, Janel Johnson, and Talisa Haggerty) Real life testimonies of God's power and faithfulness. The Son will always come out to shine and chase away the darkness. "Love Song" (feat. Talisa Haggerty) Born in sin, brought up with pain... who do we turn to? A prayer to be filled with love for God, this song requests more of God's power, sanctification, devotion, and virtue that keeps us in the way of the Father. "Right For Me" A love song for the lady in his life. RH wants to learn together, grow together, be joined together.
